Fwd: [eoi-english-2013-ni2b:19] Class sumary for october 25th

Thanks, Fina.

Work on these main points! We've got a lot of work ahead to bring your grammar under control!

[1] Must is a modal, it has no past! See here. Also, notice the different meanings in the negative.

[2] Do not confuse "because" (prep) and "because of" (conj) . See at the end of point 4 here

[3] HORROR. See here: different usage of infinitive and gerund in Spanish and English, one, two, three.

[4, 5] HORROR de mis horrores...

Y mucho cuidado con los tiempos verbales y con el uso de verbos como suggest, recommend, explain...

It was raining outside the classroom. I wish I had had a cinema session but I went to my first Friday class of this course. A few students -was +were waiting inside and the
Teacher  was talking about siblings and especially the relationships when siblings have a strong rivalry.

He suggested us open [cuidado con este verbo: see pattern] our books at page number 8. We -must +[had to] [1] read the -reading +text and -we try to answer the questions at exercise number three.

We -start +started to read in silence:
Four couples of siblings -had +have had different types of relationships -along +throughout their life.
·         Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine had a competitive relationship and   they still loathe each other .
·         Rock stars Noel and Liam Gallagher +['s rivalry] has hit the news and They -[were suing] +[have repeatedly sued] each other.
·         -[Brothers] +The Dassler +Brothers from Germany -[,] +[ : ] their rivalry  divided the town and they fell out permanently because +of [2] their sport shoes companies.
·         Top tennis players Serena and Venus Williams have always remained best friends

Firstly +, there are some new structures and -new expressions -so +very interesting to learn. José Luis suggested us talk in pairs using them:
ü  It was nothing compare to listening to The Beatles in an English pub.
ü  Rudi and Adi story Is the stuff of Hollywood legend
ü  She would be livid because I beat her  She feels so angry
ü  They  still loathe each other : it's a sorry situation to be in when brothers loathe each other
ü  To hit the news…  Robberies at  the shopping center will hit the news tomorrow
ü  To put sb down:  Sometimes my boss put [¿seguro que esto lo querías decir en pasado? En ese caso hay mejores tiempos verbales según el punto de vista...] me down ,it's the rat race I know
ü  He ended up attacking… when I finished my -speed +speech
ü  A sorry situation to be in.. -Lost +Loosing [3]  your job could be a sorry situation to be in
ü  To fall out   Then They fall out despite my advice
A few vocabularies to remember:
+TO SUE: (v) to take a legal action
+TO BE AT ODDS: They are not agree [4]/angry
+JEALOUS: adjective (sentirse celoso)  JEALOSY : name (celos)
+Whatever/ whenever/wherever/however……and with emphatic use whatsoever
(When I hear the following expressions' I remembered one of  my favourite Status Quo +['s] song " "whatever you want, whatever you do, whatever you say…") Now and then listening +TO rock music it's [5] my cup of tea.
Finally our English Friday' class end.  See you next Tuesday!
