GROUNDHOG DAY

Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated on February 2 in the United States and Canada. But the most popular place where they celebrate this day is [in] Punxsutawney, Pensilvania, because [in] this town started to celebrate this holiday in 1887.

In the past, the groundhog was a method of weather prediction that the farmers used. When it´s cloudy, the groundhog goes out of the burrow and if it doesn´t see its shadow, it means the winter will finish soon. But if it´s sunny, the groundhog sees its shadow and comes back to the burrow. It means the winter will continue for six more weeks.

Now, they repeat this ritual and prepare a lot of social events. They make [speech] speeches and show the famous groundhog that it is venerated as a God. Then they eat and drink and there are some entertainments such as sketches, [piece of] theatre and others.

Finally, I want to [remember] remind you there is a famous film called Groundhog Day that [show] shows this celebration very well. But the title of this film was translated into Spanish as Atrapado en el tiempo.

Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King, Jr., was a great man who worked for racial equality in the United States of America. He participated in the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott and many other peaceful demonstrations that protested the unfair treatment of African-Americans. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.
Commemorating the life of a tremendously important leader, we celebrate Martin Luther King Day each year in January celebrating the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. . Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
It is a time for the nation to remember the injustices that Dr. King fought. A time to remember his fight for the freedom, equality, and dignity of all races and peoples. A time to remember the message of change through nonviolence.
